Lieutenant-Colonel John Maitland (1732 – 25 October 1779) was a British military officer who was the tenth son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvie. He was the younger brother of Frederick Maitland. He served as an officer of the Royal Marines before transferring as Lieutenant Colonel to the 71st Regiment of Foot, Fraser's Highlanders in 1778. He had lost a hand while fighting in the East Indies. Maitland fought at the Battle of Stono Ferry, where he commanded the British redoubt, and helped lift the Siege of Savannah during the American Revolutionary War. He died of a fever shortly after the siege was lifted. == References == *''British Peerage'' (published 1832), p. 213. *''The Siege of Savannah'', ed.
